In Mr. Breedlove's 7th grade math classroom at FLMS, technology is utilized every day with lessons presented on the Promethean Board. Mr. Breedlove utilizes a slate synced to the board to show example math problems. This gives him the freedom to walk around the room while teaching. Students all have Active Expression response systems so they can participate and their answers to problems are immediately available. This allows Mr. Breedlove the opportunity to see where enrichment or remediation might occur.
The students also show a great deal of interest in using the iPad 2 in daily lessons. It captures their attention and helps students retain more of the skills being taught. Mr. Breedlove uses iPad apps for remediation and extra help with a focus on Apps that provide help with homework, math test preparation, and math glossary. He also uses math game apps such as Motion Math, Brain Stars, King of Math, and Math Magic. The notepad feature on the iPad can be used for classroom problems, and students can also access math videos on the Internet to enrich lessons. After attending a national math conference session on integrating technology, Breedlove shared a student produced video called "Mathmeticious" with his students (http://youtu.be/6cAs1YBELmA). They used the video to identify math concepts and it created a real interest in the exploration with advanced math concepts.
"There has been a great deal of success by tapping into the students interest in technology applications to motivate them to go further in math class," says Breedlove.
